Faculty of Allied Health Sciences

The Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FAHS) at the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, has evolved into a leading centre for health sciences education, clinical training, and research in the Northern Province. Its origins date back to 1998, when the Faculty of Medicine launched several certificate and diploma programmes to meet the growing national demand for qualified allied health professionals.
A major academic transformation began in 2004, when the University Grants Commission (UGC) approved three undergraduate degree programmes: BSc Honours in Medical Laboratory Sciences, BSc Honours in Nursing, and BPharm Honours. These degree programmes officially commenced in 2006, marking the first structured pathway for allied health education at the University of Jaffna. As student intake expanded and academic activities grew, the Unit of Allied Health Sciences (UAHS) was established in 2011 to strengthen administrative and academic coordination.
Recognising the importance of allied health education for Sri Lanka’s healthcare system, the UGC granted approval on 21 September 2019 to establish the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences as an independent faculty. It was launched with three departments—Medical Laboratory Sciences, Nursing, and Pharmacy—followed by the creation of the Department of Human Biological Sciences in 2023. The incorporation of the Sports Science Unit further expanded the faculty’s academic portfolio, leading to the introduction of the BSc Honours in Physical Education degree programme.
Today, the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences continues to grow with modern teaching facilities, upgraded laboratories, the FAHS Hub, and expanded clinical training opportunities at Teaching Hospital Jaffna. The Faculty hosts international research conferences, undergraduate symposiums, and community outreach programmes, strengthening its role as a regional leader in allied health education.
With its strong academic foundation, industry-relevant training, and commitment to research excellence, the FAHS at the University of Jaffna plays a vital role in producing highly skilled allied health professionals who contribute to improved healthcare outcomes across Sri Lanka and around the world.
